Does a Tattoo Hurt?

There are many people in today's society that are considering getting a tattoo. The tattoo has become something of a fashion item in the last few years. The celebrity endorsement has gone a very long way in making the tattoo a desired item for those that want to keep up with the latest trends.

However the thought of the pain involved in having a tattoo is perhaps keeping a few people away that really are desperate to have this art work done. There are conflicting reports on just how much pain one suffers when in the process of getting a tattoo; it is probably best described as relative to the individual and their own thresholds.

Of course you may find it hardly hurts at all, but if enter the parlor expecting the worst, it is more than likely going to happen. Relaxation is the key, if your body is tense your nerve ends will be extremely sensitive, if you can manage to relax you will feel so much better.

Tattoos are applied by needles piercing the skin, there really is no way to do this without some amount of pain, large or small tattoo, the pain will still apply. Your tolerance levels will be tested; if you manage to remain calm everything will be okay.

The needles that puncture you skin are pretty light, but it is the depth of the outline that surrounds a tattoo which cause the most pain, this is because they are driven deeper to give a clear indication of where the tattoo begins. The shading is always easier because the needles do not have to go anywhere near as deep. The tattoo process will normally cause a burning or scratching sensation, this can get worse if you are looking at having the tattoo put in a place that is more sensitive, always ask the tattoo artist where these areas are.

Here are a few obvious pointers to help with the stress, they may reduce your pain or at least give you something better to think about.

  • Take some music with you, you can close your eyes and drift away, concentrating on another thing always helps.
  • Be positive, tell yourself that you will enjoy the experience and look forward to when you can see the finished article.
  • Take a book, if you are able to read that might be a good idea. If you can focus on the book time will pass quickly and you will not realize the work has been completed.

No matter what, just know that it is worth it! A tattoo lasts a lifetime and like most things in life, no pain, no gain!
